Technology at the Wheel: Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Tags: , Blog, IT industry

At Working Nets, we love technology! However, knowing when to disconnect is important. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Do you text and drive?

As technology continues to advance and further integrate into our daily lives, it can become difficult to disconnect. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Working Nets, Inc. is here to share information with you about distracted driving and help spread awareness about the dangers of technology at the wheel.

The Dangers of Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is incredibly dangerous. People who use their cell phones and other social devices while driving cause thousands of deaths every year, including their own. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving contributes to 1.6 million crashes each year and that one out of every four car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving. Additionally, texting and driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving.

So, Why Can’t Drivers Manage to Let Go of Their Cell Phones?

When you leave your home or office, those work and personal emails and phone calls don’t stop coming in. It doesn’t matter if you are on a plane in the sky or speeding down the highway – technology makes it not just possible, but simple, for anyone to reach you at just about any time. As people, we have grown so accustomed to reacting to the ding and buzz of our cell phones that we can easily forget how detrimental this behavior is – especially behind the wheel of a car.

How to Say No to Your Cell Phone While Driving

Distracted driving crashes and fatalities are preventable. It is important to remember that just because technology calls, it doesn’t mean you have to answer. Answering your emails and text messages can wait. If you are worried that someone is trying to contact you about something urgent, simply pull your vehicle over and come to a safe stop before reaching for your cell phone. It is also helpful to silence your cell phone and store it out of arm’s reach. Click here to take the pledge to be a cell-free, attentive driver.
