The HDMI cable is relatively new–they were first used in December of 2002. So, it’s understandable that not many people are aware of its function.

For those who aren’t particularly tech savvy, the phrase ‘HDMI cable’ may sound confusing.  We understand that, for many, cables are defined by shapes rather than what they’re called, and it’s not always apparent what they do.  And in fact, the HDMI cable is relatively new–they were first used in December of 2002.  So, it’s understandable that not many people are aware of its function.  To discover what an HDMI cable does and how it can benefit you, read on.

What is an HDMI Cable?

In the past, you used VGA cables and AUX cables for visual and sound, respectively.  VGA cables are the ones that have many prongs, with two screws on the ends.  AUX cables are what you use to plug in your iPod to your headphones.  An HDMI cable takes visual and sound frequencies and combines them, transferring them through one cable.  It is used for HD-capable devices, such as your high definition TV or your high definition computer monitor.

Why Should I Use One?

Simply put, it requires less cords to get your technology to function.  We understand that tangled cords and confusing input ports can make setting up your technology a mind-numbing disaster.  With an HDMI cable, you’re combining two cables into one.  It also carries high definition quality audio and visuals, which helps you to enjoy your media that much more.  The only real downside to using an HDMI cable is that it doesn’t transmit data very far.  You shouldn’t need to run one very far, but should you ever have to, its signal degrades with distance.  For instance, an HDMI cable running 20 feet will have less quality than one running 3 feet.  Consider this when setting up your technology!
