How to Salvage a Laptop from Water Damage

Don’t worry, with a little know how and quick tech thinking you may be able to save your laptop from excessive water damage.

If you have spilled water, milk, wine, tea, or another fluid on your laptop you may think the situation is unfixable and you might be stuck buying a new laptop. Don’t worry, with a little know how and quick tech thinking you may be able to save your laptop from excessive water damage. Read on to learn more about what you can do for your laptop when accidents happen.

Step One

Immediately turn off your laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery. If water or any other liquid touches the laptop’s circuits it will short.

Step Two

Unplug any peripherals from your laptop. These include mice, wireless cards, and other such extras.

Step Three

Once your laptop is off and all the extras are unplugged, turn it upside down. This will stop any liquid or water from seeping deeper into your laptop and causing extra problems.

Step Four

Use a lint free paper towel or gentle cloth to clean the liquid from your keyboard.

Step Five

While some laptop keyboards are spill resistant by design others are not. Pour out the liquid contained in your keyboard enclosure. If your laptop has a keyboard which is easy to remove, remove it. If it is not, leave it alone.

Step Six

Use a clean and very slightly moistened cloth to remove any sticky residue the spill may have left behind, if you spilled something such as juice, milk, or wine.

Step Seven

It is important to protect yourself from electrostatic discharge. Static electricity can damage any computer and it is important to know how to ground yourself so you are protected from harm.

Step Eight

If your laptop still is not in working order, you may need to take apart the case to get rid of the whole spill and clean the parts. You can do this yourself, but may want to have someone with the proper expertise do it so you do not damage your laptop further. A serious spill may require serious help.
