Keyboard shortcuts are combinations of two or more keys that you can use to perform a task that would typically require a mouse or other pointing device. Keyboard shortcuts can make it easier to work with your PC, saving you time and effort as you work with Windows and other apps. But the recent update to Windows 10 has changed some of those time-honored keyboard shortcuts (and added some new ones!) So here is one of the most useful keyboard shortcuts for multitasking: Window Snapping!
Window Snapping
Windows 10 has improved Snap — the ability to align windows by “snapping” them against the sides of the screen. You can now snap windows vertically or snap windows to a 2×2 grid.
- Windows Key + Left – Snap current window to the left side of the screen.
- Windows Key + Right – Snap current window the the right side of the screen.
- Windows Key + Up – Snap current window to the top of the screen.
- Windows Key + Down – Snap current window to the bottom of the screen.
Combine these shortcuts to snap into a corner — for example, Windows Key + Left and then Windows Key + Up would snap a window into the top-left quadrant of the screen. The first two keyboard shortcuts aren’t new, but the way they work with the 2×2 snapping feature is.
(You can also use the mouse — drag and drop a window to the left or right edges of your screen, or drag and drop them into one of the four corners to snap into quadrants.)
Need a Cheat Sheet?
If you need a cheat sheet for your keyboard shortcuts, Microsoft has just published one that you can download and print. While Microsoft already offers online documentation on keyboard shortcuts, the format of the page can be difficult to sift through. Fortunately, Microsoft now offers an offline version in Word .DOCX format.
There are 42 shortcuts in total, mostly dealing with window management, the Start menu, the Task view, and Cortana. Keep in mind the list only includes Windows key shortcuts, not shortcuts involving Ctrl or Alt.
